First Aid Practical Update

Changes to on campus First Aid Practical Days

Thank you for your patience whilst we have put the required plans in place to navigate the ever-changing environment created by COVID-19.  We are now in a position where we can recommence delivery of HLTAID003 Provide first aid.  However, there are some changes we will be required to make to ensure we create a COVID-safe environment for all staff and students involved in the course.  These changes are sumamrised below:

1. Class caps

Classes will be capped at a maximum of ten participants.  This will allow us to ensure social distancing measures can be adhered to, and resources can be appropriately shared and cleaned as outlined below.

2. Practical assessment adjustment

With first aid being a ‘hands-on’ course, it is considered a higher risk in relation to COVID-19 transmission.  In order to manage this, some changes to the practical assessment will be implemented.

    • CPR

Manikins will be shared between two and disinfected after each use.  Rescue breaths will be performed to the side of the manikin, avoiding direct contact of the mouth with the manikin or any shield.

    • Other simulated tasks

Other tasks such as bandaging, slings, inhaler use and anaphylaxis management will be performed on self instead of a partner.  This will minimise touching.

3. Use of PPE

As per the previously issued guidelines, appropriate PPE will be provided where required to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and recommendations.
